Art Impressions at Simon Says Stamp!

Hey all!  Back today sharing a card and I am so honored to be featured on the Simon Says Stamp blog!  For this card I used a fabulous set by Art Impressions called Cake Popper.  Simon Says Stamp carries a large assortment of Art Impressions images along with an ocean of paper crafting supplies.  If you visit their site, prepare to leave a few shekels behind :)

Here's a little write up I shared with them regarding my card...

Every time I need a special card, I check my stash of stamps and Art Impressions always stands out with the perfect image and sentiment.  I particularly love their Ai Girlfriend and Ai People lines and find that I know the folks featured in their designs!  AND sometimes that someone is me ;)  Though I don’t have blond hair, I feel like I could easily be the over zealous gal on my card.  I love to celebrate and that love is only surpassed by my love of cake…LOL!  Ai images can’t help but make people smile, so I have a tendency to use fun, bright colors when using them :)  Their bold size takes up most of the landscape on a standard A2 card (4 14” x 5 1/2”), but that’s ok because they’re so quirky and perfectly detailed that they don’t need too much else to finish them off.

Copic colors used:

skin- E00, E000, R20, E11
hair- E13, Y21, Y00
leopard print top- E31, E50
hat- RV29, RV23, RV21, BG09, BG05, BG02
earrings- Y26, Y21, Y00
cake- RV23, RV21, RV10
ribbon- BG09, BG05, BG02
roses on cake- RV29, RV23, RV21(flower) YG17, YG13 (leaves)
balloons- RV29, RV23, RV21 (left)  BG09, BG05, BG02 (right)
floor- C7, C5, C3, C1, C00
background- BV02, BV01, BV00, BV0000

Card 2 for my class at CP2

Copic colors used:  fruit (R59, R29, R22, R000), leaves (G28, G24, G21)

Hey, all!  I just want to pop in to share the second card I'll be teaching next Friday at China Phoenix 2.  Still playing with those wonderful fruit themed stamps by Stampendous, this image is Cling Pomegranate.

This time I relied more on creating a colorful background instead of coloring the entire image with Copics.  I love this technique and I try to use it frequently...I laid out a craft sheet and swiped Distress Stains in Peeled Paint and Fired Brick directly on the sheet.  Next I added Peacock Feathers, but I only had this in a reinker, so I took the dropper and randomly swirled it around the sheet and generously misted everything with water.  Now, when I use this method, I pretty much just use what I have on hand.  Sometimes I will swipe Distress Ink Pads directly across the sheet.  In this case, I wanted more intense color, so I opted for the Stains and Reinker.  Because the color from these sources is so much more concentrated, I really had to apply quite a bit of the water to dilute it enough so that it wasn't too vivid and would still allow my stamped image to be the focal point.  Otherwise my stamped image would have disappeared into the background.  Once I've misted everything with water, I laid my white panel face down on top of all that lovely color.  When I lifted it up, it was covered in this wonderful palette.  If I wanted more color in areas, I just laid it down again.  I also let it dry naturally for a bit and went back in to pick up more of those fabulous drips.  It's really fun to do this, because you never know what you're going to end up with.  I just love it!

Once my panel had dried thoroughly, I stamped the Cling Pomegranate on top using Memento Ink in Tuxedo Black.  I also stamped the image on a scrap panel and colored up the fruit and leaves, and trimmed them out.  The rest of the card was easy to assemble and a small square of burlap seemed like an appropriate detail to finish with.  Of course, I added a black button because I'm completely obsessed with them right now.  I buy them by the jar full at a local antique store.  Last time I dropped in, I also picked up a huge jar of keys, so you'll probably start seeing keys on all my cards, too.  It's a good thing I didn't pick up anything larger, like a box of cheese graters.  That would make for a very interesting card...LOL!

Pop in tomorrow for the new challenge at Kraftin' Kimmie Stamps!  Until then, stay crafty!

Upcoming Class at CP2

Copic colors used:  pears (YG67, YG17, YG13, YG01, Y000), leaves (G28, G24, G21), branch (E37, E35, E31), flowers (R29, R22, R000), label (E35, E31, E50, R59, R22), blue green accents (BG09, BG05, BG10), yellow halo (Y35, Y32, Y000)
Hey, all!  I just wanted to share 1 of 2 cards I will be teaching in a class at China Phoenix 2 on Friday, June 12th, at 10:30am - 1:30pm.  I've been playing with these wonderful fruit themed images from Stampendous lately, this one is called Cling Pear Blossom.   They remind me of the vintage advertising labels found on fruit crates up until the 1950's.  The images I've seen online are usually brightly colored and very eye-catching, and I can't help but be drawn to their retro appearance.

Though this is a fairly bright palette, I tried to keep the coloring quick and simple.  Also, I topped off the YG colors on the pears with a generous layer of Y000 dotted randomly over the image to give them that slightly dappled appearance that pears seem to have.  I picked up muslin fabric at an antique store and stamped it with a Stampendous background called Cling Seed Background.  A touch of Gathered Twigs Distress Ink sponged onto the edges makes it look a bit old, which is good.  Overall, a very simple card to put together.

Now that I have the mechanics of this card laid out, it's time to discuss something more important.  Have you ever tried a Harry and David Royal Riviera Pear?  A friend of mine gifted me with a box of these delectable fruits last year for Christmas.  At first I wasn't sure what was in the box, but once opened, there sat 9 of the largest, most perfect pear specimens I have ever laid eyes on.  Weighing in at around a 1/2 lb each, these pears were almost too pretty to eat.  AND...to further gild the pear lily, one lone pear was ensconced in gold foil.  How elegant!

I know how extravagant a gift of this nature can be, so I had my doubts as to whether these would taste any different than the standard working class pears found in WalMart.  Boy, was I wrong!  I picked one up and held it in my hand.  It appeared to be ready to eat.  No need to wait for that brief 15 minute window of ripeness, that if missed, leaves you with a disappointing piece of overly soft fruit bordering on the verge of rot.  Nope, these were ready to go.  One joyous bite and immediately that sweet pear elixir ran down my elbow.  Good gracious, I have NEVER tasted a pear so delicious!  I wanted to hide them and keep them for myself, but I allowed my husband to have one, JUST one, and I actually gave my sister one, as well.  Pretty generous, if I must say so myself.  My sister later told me that she took the pear to work to eat the next day and a co-worker caught her in her office cradling it and calling it "my precious".  What can I say?  We're a family of foodies.  I'm actually considering heading to the Harry and David website to order myself a box.  I'm sure I can come up with a "special occasion" reason that I need to do this.  When is Arbor Day?  Have I already missed Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day?  Darn, that's in January!  I'll keep trying ;)

Tune in tomorrow and I'll share card number 2 for my class.  Until then, stay crafty!

It's a Girl!

Hey, all!  Just a short post to share a card I made for my husband's boss.  He and his wife recently had their first child and Kirk asked me to make a card welcoming the little one into the world.  As you know, my timeline is not quite in sync with everyone else's timeline, so I was pleased that I was able to complete it before her first birthday.  Actually, she's only about 6-weeks old now, so I'm not doing too badly...right?

I used a super sweet image by Mo Manning for Penny Black called An Angel Among Us.  Mo creates such amazing images, I just can't get enough of them.  Plus, they're an absolute joy to color.  This image is a bit on the large side, so a lot of extra embellishments were not needed.  I'm in a button and twine phase right now, as you have probably noticed.

I have more cards to share this week, so please pop back in.  Thanks for stopping by and stay crafty!

Girlfriends...priceless!

Hey, all!  A blog post in the middle of the week for me is a rarity, but I fell in love with these Girlfriend stamps by Art Impressions and just couldn't contain myself!  I cajoled, begged, and bribed my boss at The Hen House Paperie to carry this line so I jumped at the opportunity to make a sample to use in the shop.

When I look at this image I am reminded of all the crazy, fabulous, amazing friends I have and I just can't help but smile.  What a lucky girl I am!  By the way, I'm the one in the red dress on the left...LOL!  Which one are you? ;)

I know this post is brief, but I hear the Sandman calling my name.  Until next time, stay crafty!

Tales from the Garden

Hey, all!  Hope this post finds everyone doing well and soaking up the sunshine at your end of the keyboard.  We're on sunshine overload here in the Land of Enchantment and could use a little rain.  Or a LOTTA rain.  Let me know if you have some extra wet stuff laying around; maybe we can negotiate  a trade.

With the official start of Summer just a day away, my mind starts to drift and fill with thoughts of all the good things that arrive with that sunny season...the kiss of warmth on my skin as I spend more time outside, the heady fragrance of BBQ emanating from my husband's smoker, the romantic lure of dining alfresco (doesn't a meal always taste better when enjoyed outside?), the wonder of witnessing a fiery sunset, and the glory of beholding the bold blooms found on nature's floral gifts.

I don't really possess a green thumb.  If I had to assign it a color, it would be more of a brown thumb.  For those of you who speak Copic, it would be along the lines of an E37 (Sepia).  Not quite a 100 (black), as I DO manage to keep the poor things going even though they no doubt pray for death on a daily basis.  I am barely keeping the 3 medium sized planters in front of my house alive even though they are filled with sage and zinnias which I was assured were hard to kill.  Challenge accepted.

Fortunately for me, I have flower stamps and a boatload of Copics, so bold, bright, blooms are only just a few markers away.  The card I'm sharing today features a beautiful stamp by Penny Black.  Believe it or not, I actually made this card a while back and forgot to share it.  I love the collage-y (is that a word?) feel to the image and the fact that I can add color wherever I feel like adding it (or not adding it) and it still looks finished.

SO...even though my real life "garden" is a bit on the lean side, my Copic "garden"is plentiful (and harder to kill).  Plus, my "Sepia" thumb can be any color I want it to be ;)

Until next time, stay crafty!

Da Bomb

Hola! Welcome back! I promised you a new card today and I'm here to deliver. I'm still coloring up these fabby Kenny K images and I just can't stop! This little chica has to be my favorite out of this group. I think it's that attitude and those butt kicking Doc Martens she's wearing...LOL! She reminds me of someone I used to know and also a little bit of my sister (hey, Trissi). Again, I think it's the Docs.

The other day I actually had someone ask me about the Copic colors I used on a card, so I thought I would start including that info if ya'll are interested in it. I'll put the Copic info on the bottom of the post, but if I forget once in a while, please don't pelt me with ink pads. AND, if you do, make them Distress Ink Pads because those are my faves ;D

Da Bomb was so much fun to color. I just can't get over those shoes! I slathered a nice big coating of Diamond Glaze on them 'cuz they just seemed to scream for it. I also added a handmade felt flower to the corner. These flowers are super easy and really cute. I have linked to this tutorial by Lolly Chops before, but if you missed it, here it is again. In the video, she recommends felt glue, but I am having much better luck with Fabritac by Beacon. It's also a great adhesive for ribbon and it's available at Walmart in the craft area.

The first Kenny K Krafty Girlz challenge is scheduled for Sunday, so be sure to pop back by to see my challenge card. Also, head over to the Kenny K download site to purchase these and lots of other fabulous images. Don't forget to grab the free digi while you're there. She is awesome!

Tootles!

Eureeka!! January Class Samples are Finished!

Good Afternoon! I finally completed my January class samples and can breathe a little easier for the moment. I was really sweating it for a while ;D

I know in a previous post, I confessed my relentless obsession with Christmas and how I love to begin the celebrating right after Halloween and continue clear through New Year's Day. However...once the new year walks its happy butt through the door, then I 'm done. Finished. Kaput. No more Christmas. The tree comes down, the decorations get packed away, and the Yuletide tunes sit untouched on the iPod until Walmart rolls out the holiday chotchkes next year. Long story short, I put Christmas to bed for a looooong nap and moved on to the next holiday lurking around the corner...Valentine's Day.

The Valentine's Day cards I created for my class are not over-the-top, but are more on the subtle side. I was shooting for cards that were a little more versatile and could be used for a number of other occasions. I was craving a bit of whimsey when I started putting these cards together and nothing satisfies a "sweet" tooth like the adorable critters by Penny Black. These images are great, because it only takes a bit of color to bring them to life as you can see with the hedgehog and cat cards. The froggy queen was a bit of a diva, however, and it took me a while to make her look presentable. Did I get frustrated? I started to, but then I realized that this little obstacle meant that I needed to add more soft greens and yellows to my ever-expanding Copic Marker library. Any excuse to buy more Copic Markers is..., well, as Martha would say "It's a good thing"... ;D To finish the cards, I added a non-traditional paper palette and a few embellies and called it a day.

Now, what on earth will I do for my March class?

Twisted Christmas: Part 2

Hello everyone! Here is the second card I will be teaching as part of my Twisted Christmas class at China Phoenix 2 in November. Again, I used some images by Stampotique that really inspire a bit of creepy whimsey. I added a few Christmas accessories and glitz and there you have it! A theme that falls somewhere between Halloween and Christmas :D

I started with the spider image (Mr. Stripes) and stamped him on white cardstock. I colored him with Copics, added glitter hightlights to his body, and a couple of generous dots of Diamond Glaze to his eyes, and I sat him aside to dry. I stamped the hat and packages from the Christmas Cube, colored them with Copics, and covered them with Diamond Glaze as well, and sat them aside to dry. I stamped my three little friends (3 in a Round) on different colored cardstocks and cut out different elements from each piece of paper. I created a subtle background on the round white die cut circle by stamping a Hero Arts background stamp in Soft Leaf, following by a light stippling of Peeled Paint Distress Ink, and a generous spritz of Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Marshmallow.

I assembled my card and added the different layers of the 3 in a Round image using foam tape. I really wanted these little guys to look like they were looking out of a hole or a cave. Once my glittered and glazed images were dry, I cut them out and also added them to the card with foam tape. (I love foam tape!! I buy it at an office supply store in a disc the size of a steering wheel! Hahaha!) A big green bow and a few red gems finishes it off.

I couldn't find just the right word stamp to narrate the scene on the front of the card, so I had to make up my own by computer generating the following "Manuel didn't understand why his brothers had misgivings about the rustling on the roof when it most certainly must be Santa". LOL!!

If the past two cards are not your cup of tea, stay tuned tomorrow when I will feature a more traditional Christmas card using some Tim Holtz stamps.
